Detroit area was just behind in second place for the 12 months ended June 30 at 23.8 percent.

There was some good news for Colorado. The number of businesses filing for bankruptcy protection seems to be letting up. Those were down nearly 5 percent, to 490 businesses.

Denver bankruptcy lawyer Sonja Ann Becker says many small businesses and individuals who got by for a while on credit are being forced to file for protection.

She's seen people so strapped they have to delay a filing so they can raise enough money to cover the legal fees.
