New Wildfire Prompts Evacuations

A new fire has erupted in Colorado and has covered at least 200-300 acres -- sending some residents scrambling to evacuate.

The Big Elk Fire is burning about 5 miles south of Estes Park. It apparently started right along Highway 36, near the community of Pinewood Springs.

Larimer County officials say residents near the Big Elk Meadow subdivision northwest of Lyons are being asked to evacuate. The order affects as many as 124 homes.

Aerial tankers and helicopters are trying to tackle the flames. This is the most effective method, since the fire is burning in very heavy timber and on steep terrain.
