Spiders in the Classroom

Students at Canon City's only charter school are getting a break from classes while workers try to take care of an infestation of black widow spiders in the school gym.

Nobody was bitten, and classes are expected to resume Tuesday after the building has been sprayed and cracks filled with insulation.

The infestation at the Mountain View Core Knowledge School -- which has students in kindergarten through eighth grade -- was discovered earlier this week.

The school has been located in the same building since 1999, but the gym was added last summer. Officials say spiders and insects
probably took up residence in the gym because it was left dark all
summer.

School officials say students were sent home with some school work so they won't lose instructional time.
