Local Phone Service

Some Colorado residents will soon have another choice for local phone service. Sprint Corporation has announced plans to expand its local phone service to Colorado and 35 other states and the District of Columbia.

The company says it will immediately begin offering bundled calling plans that include local, long-distance and wireless service in selected markets in those states. Right now, Sprint offers local phone service to just five percent of the country.

Qwest remains the dominant provider of local phone service in
Colorado, but competition has been growing. Comcast, M-C-I, McLeod
U-S-A and several small resellers are making inroads into Qwest's
market share.

Sprint's announcement comes about a week after a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission that gave states the right to continue requiring former Bell companies to lease elements of their networks to competitors.
