A top official at the Air Force Academy says cadets who violate codes of honor and conduct hurt themselves and tarnish an institution that has produced numerous military heroes.
During a 20-minute speech today, Brigadier General Johnny Weida held a sword he says he brought to remind cadets of why they are at the academy. He says recent actions by some cadets have rusted and corroded the sword, and he's confident that the trend can be reversed and the sword scrubbed clean.
The speech came after seven male cadets were caught in an off-campus hotel room this past weekend with two female teenagers.
Those under 21 years old were ticketed by police for drinking.
The incident was the latest embarrassment for the elite school while it
struggles to overcome a sexual assault scandal.
Weida says cadets who fail to follow the honor code and help solve problems will not remain at the school. He says cadets will be expected to identify classmates who violate standards of conduct and honor.
