Sheriff Fred Wegener, who came to the public's attention because of a shooting at a high school in Bailey, Colorado, was slightly injured Saturday (10-14-06) during a high speed chase with a motorcyclist.
Sheriff Wegener was part of a road block created to try and stop a speeding motorcyclist who was being chased by a Park County Sheriff's deputy.
Sheriff Wegener says the cyclist slowed down at the roadblock, like he was going to stop, and then he sped up.
During that time, the sheriff says he tried to push the motorcyclist off his bike and in doing so, slightly injured his knee and a finger.
Sheriff Wegener immediately jumped into his unmarked Dodge Charger police car and pursued the suspect.
The sheriff says speeds at one point got up to 140-miles per hour and involved some very dangerous traffic maneuvers at times.
The sheriff says the motorcyclist eventually went onto a dirt road and that's when he used the bumper of his police car to bring the chase to an end.
The motorcyclist has not been identified, but is sitting in the Park County Jail facing several charges.
The injuries to the sheriff are minor.
