Conservation efforts covering about two million acres in southwest Colorado are among several in 27 states that will share $57.8 million in grants from the Interior Department.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Tuesday that a habitat conservation plan focusing on 150 miles of streams in Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande and Saguache counties will get $120,000.
The San Luis Valley Habitat Conservation plan aims to conserve bald eagles, the yellow-billed cuckoo, the endangered Southwestern willow flycatcher and other species.
The competitive grants are awarded through the Cooperative Endangered Species Fund for conservation planning and acquiring habitat for threatened and endangered fish, wildlife and plants.
The funds in part to help landowners who volunteer to conserve species.
