A Colorado Springs teacher is doing what she can to help fight cancer.

She's training for an Olympic-distance triathlon in honor of two students at her school who have cancer.

"I used to do it all the time before I was married and had a child," said Mrs. Ingrid Fatianow-Hibbits.

Mrs. Ingrid Fatianow-Hibbitts says she's been wanting to get back into shape.

But, hadn't found the motivation to do it until she met two special students at Bates Elementary School.

"I came to school and met Montana. She touched my heart. Then I had lunch in the lunch room with Javier's teacher and found out he had leukemia. Something just clicked in my brain," said Mrs. Fatianow-Hibbitts.

Mrs. Fatianow-Hibbitts has already raised $2400 and is getting ready to compete in a triathlon this summer.

"Running, swimming and biking to raise money for leukemia," said Javier Batterton.

Javier was diagnosed with leukemia when he was just two years old. He's now in remission.

"I'm done having leukemia, I think," said Javier Batterton.

Montana Smasal hopes she's done with bone cancer.

This is the second time she's had to battle it. She was first diagnosed when she was five years old.

"Montana is our strength. That's what keeps everyone going.," said her mother, Joanee Smasal.

And that's what is keeping Mrs. Fatianow-Hibbitts focused on her goal.

"I'm healthy, able to do this and doing it for people who aren't so fortunate," said Mrs. Fatianow-Hibbitts.

"It's kind of crazy and nice at the same time," said Montana Smasal.

Montana's mother says she will likely have to have her right leg amputated this summer and Javier will soon have the catheter in his chest removed.
