Pledge of Allegiance

The Colorado branch of the American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit over a new state law requiring students and teachers to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The ACLU of Colorado filed the lawsuit in federal district court in Denver. The suit challenges the constitutionality of the pledge law. Legal director Mark Silverstein says the law violates the fundamental freedoms the American flag is meant to represent.

University of Denver College of Law Professor Alan Chen is serving as lead volunteer attorney on the case. Chen says the suit was filed on behalf of teachers and students who feel expressions of belief should come from the heart---not from a government mandate.

The law requiring recitation of the pledge took effect August 6th.
