Military officials say insurgents using a shoulder fired missile brought down a Chinook transport helicopter Sunday. They say 16 soldiers were killed, and 21 others were injured.
Lt. Col. Thomas Budzyna won't confirm whether any Ft. Carson soldiers are among the dead until all next of kin have all been notified. Earlier Sunday he did say some of the wounded were from Fort Carson.
The troops on board the helicopter were heading to the Baghdad airport, on their way home for leave.
This is the single deadliest attack in Iraq since the war there began.
