Poor weather has put the brakes on plans to travel on North America's highest paved road... at least until next year.
National Forest Service officials today closed Mount Evans Road at the Echo Lake fee station for the rest of the season. The entire 28-mile road, which is Colorado state Highway Five, runs from Interstate 70 at Idaho Springs to the 14,264-foot high peak.
Clear Creek District Ranger Daniel Lovato says the road will reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend 2007, weather permitting.
Meantime, Trail Ridge Road near Estes Park reaches 12,183 feet, making it the highest "continuously" paved road in the U-S. That scenic road in Rocky Mountain National Park remains open, weather permitting.
