Colorado State Patrol troopers were led on a high speed chase through two southern Colorado counties Wednesday. Now, an Arizona man is behind bars facing drug smuggling charges.

Troopers first spotted the driver allegedly speeding through La Veta Pass just before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. When troopers tried to make a traffic stop authorities say the driver sped up and refused to stop. Speeds reached 120 mph as the Mazda descended La Veta Pass into Huerfano County.

State Troopers threw several Stop Sticks, a tire-delating device, in an attempt to stop the driver, but each time he was able to swerve and continued to elude Troopers.

Finally, just west of Walsenburg, their Stop Sticks worked. His tires flattened, the driver swerved, lost control and collided with another vehicle. The Mazda then went off the right side of the road where it rolled. The driver fled on foot and was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The driver of the other vehicle and no Troopers were injured. The suspect was treated at the hospital in Walsenburg and booked into the Huerfano County Jail. Charges are pending through the District Attorneys Office in Trinidad.

Troopers say they recovered just over 20 pounds of marijuana from the vehicle.

No names are being released at this time, as this is an on going investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
