The Conficker worm wiggled, but mostly wimped out.
The Conficker internet worm was due to attack computers worldwide on Wednesday, April Fool’s Day.
Experts saw some infected computers trying to contact a command server, but damage was limited, because of the big push to get computer users to update their security firewalls. That kept Conficker from going viral.
Dale Meyerrose explains it. The former Chief Information Officer for Intelligence under the Bush Administration says, “If the government and the media hadn't been on top of it, and if people hadn't taken it so seriously, it would have been much more serious than it was.”
Meyerrose, who currently is the Vice-President for Cyber and Information Assurance at the Harris Corporation, says experts worldwide, within governments or working independently, constantly stay on the lookout for damaging viruses or malware.
Meyerrose says the people and groups who are behind those efforts are becoming much more sophisticated and organized.
He says even though the due date has passed for the Conficker worm, we shouldn’t let down our guard.
