Man Coughs Up Nail Stuck In His Nose
Going to the doctor doesn't get any weirder than this. A Colorado Springs man gets an MRI, but ends up getting a lot more than that. Posted: 12:54 PM Apr 1, 2009Reporter: Eric Lupher Email Address: elupher@kktv.com |

You would be amazed at the stuff found in people's bodies. Yes, there are the implants, but also nails, magnets, shrapnel. Ferromagnetic materials inside the body can be extremely dangerous for an MRI scan. This guy complained of severe pain and is only lucky that the twisting / moving of the nail didn't cause real damage. Everybody entering the MRI room should be screened with one of those new ferromagnetic-only detectors like they show on www.MRImetalDetector.com [ Report Abuse ]

"Once it's in the nasal cavity like that, a little membrane forms around it and it becomes a foreign object." No, actually, once it's in the nasal cavity it becomes a foreign object. It doesn't take growing membranes or anything else. [ Report Abuse ]

Not that unusual, apparently when I was 3 I shoved a green crayon up my nose,[hey I was 3!], and my mom thought she got it all out. Fast foward 35 years, and after a mighty sneeze, out pops this 1inch long chunk of crayon again! I asked my mother, and she told me the long forgotten story. [ Report Abuse ]

What the article doesn't explain is that MRI machines create tremendous magnetic fields which would pull on the metal nail, causing the pain while in the machine, and dislodging the object, allowing it to be coughe up afterward. [ Report Abuse ]

I have never read a more poorly written, less informative story in my life! You do not answer the most burning question "How?", and what's with "may have been 30 years"? Could it have been 10 minutes? Word choices were poor. The nail "becomes" a foreign object...like it was not to begin with...and the sentences seem randomly strung together, which leaves me to ask, "Huh?" [ Report Abuse ]

Mr or Mrs Safescan...it is obvious you sell the product that you have told everyone to use. Unfortunatly it doesn't work and would not have found this nail in this patients nose. As an MRI tech not a sales person, I know that good patient care takes more than waving a "magic wand".

If the doctor made a gaffe, it's not the writer's fault. It says the doctor thinks it was there 30 years because if the patient doesn't recall, it probably happened as a child. Some of you aren't reading. It doesn't just mention 30yrs in the headline! Also, the vast majority of television pieces are written to read aloud. We generally speak more simplistically than we write. By contrast, you will see news articles for print publication written to about the 10th grade level. You won't see much beyond that because half of the population is functionally illiterate. Look how few people complaining about how this was written up have used proper spelling or grammar! Next, there are plenty of stories about bloody gun rampages and the economy. There's nothing wrong with a break from that every now and then! The story should have identified the doctor, hospital or town but I imagine they kept it short for the text-messaging types who lack an attention span.

As someone who performs MRI's, stuff like this can happen occassionally but not on a daily basis. So please don't get mad at us when we ask you to clarify your past exposure to metal. If you answer I don't know or maybe, don't be surprised if your sent for an xray.
