Rabies Case in Colorado

A ten-week-old puppy brought to Colorado from Texas has tested positive for rabies. It's the first time a dog has tested positive for the disease in Colorado since 1974.

Health officials say a teenage boy brought the dog from a remote section of the Texas panhandle to Fort Morgan on July 13th. The animal developed paralysis and other neurological symptoms on July 28th, and died four days later.

Epidemiologist John Pape calls the case an isolated incident, and says rabies in domesticated animals is extremely rare in Colorado.

Local and state health officials have been investigating the case to identify anyone who may have been bitten by or exposed to the puppy.

The boy and his family are receiving rabies shots as a precaution.
