Bubonic Plague

El Paso County Health Department officials say fleas from two Prairie Dog colonies near Midway have tested positive for Bubonic Plague.

Midway is just North of the Pueblo county line.

Health officials say it's important to protect your pets, especially cats who are allowed to roam. They should be treated with flea prevention.

Cats who are infected will often have swelling around the mouth, head and neck. Health officials say you should hold sick pets with gloves and face protection, and you should get them to your veterinarian as soon as possible. The vet should then call the Health Department to report an illness.

Also, people who spend time near Prairie Dog colonies should use good insect repellent, especially on arms, pant legs, legs and ankles, socks and shoe tops.
