A federal discrimination lawsuit has been filed by three Paralympic athletes against the U.S. Olympic Committee. They allege the USOC has made them second-class athletes and blocked them from raising money.
The suit alleges the USOC violates a federal law by not providing the same benefits to Paralympians that Olympic athletes receive. Those benefits include health insurance, grants, help with living expenses and opportunities to promote the Paralympics brand.
The suit asks the USOC to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. It will also seek some compensatory damages.
Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel says funding for U.S. Paralympics has increased 100 percent from the previous four years.
