Refund Checks

Checks are in the mail.

The Treasury Department on Friday began mailing checks worth up to 400 dollars per child to more than 25 million middle-income
households.

The refunds are a result of tax cuts enacted in May. Tax credits for children were increased to a thousand dollars each.

Checks for the difference between the old and new credits will go to families who qualified in 2002.

President Bush this week visited the plant that prints and mails checks.

Families told him they'll spend their money on school
supplies.

He says the increased spending will boost the economy.

The checks will go out in mailings over three weeks based on the last digits of taxpayers' Social Security numbers.
