Recall Campaign Started In Canon City

Opponents of a plan to store tons of low-level radioactive waste in Canon City have started a recall campaign aimed at local officials. Members of Colorado Citizens Against Toxic Waste are also trying to raise $150,000 for attorney's fees to fight Cotter's upcoming license renewal.

The group is opposing the Cotter Corporation's plan to accept 470,000 tons of waste soil from a New Jersey Superfund site, and other future sites.

City and county officials have no regulatory oversight in Cotter's case. But recall petitions seek their removal for allegedly failing to call for the closure and dismantling of Cotter's operations. Organizers have until mid-September to collect signatures.
