State health officials confirm that a blood sample taken from a
28-year-old Weld County resident has tested positive for the virus.
The unidentified man was not hospitalized and is recovering.
State epidemiologists say the man became ill on July Sixth. He
saw his doctor five days later. The positive test result came back yesterday.
More than 120 blood samples have been tested for West Nile virus
in Colorado this year. Only one has been positive.
Chief medical officer Doctor Ned Calonge says it's not surprising that Weld County would have 2003's first human case of West Nile.
The virus had already been detected in birds and horses in Weld
County this year.
