Three Southern Colorado schools have been named 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Wildflower Elementary School in Colorado Springs, Heritage Elementary School in Pueblo and Las Animas Elementary School in Las Animas are among the 305 schools nationwide to be honored.
Schools receiving this award are recognized for overall academic excellence, or for successfully closing achievement gaps. All public and private K-12 schools in the nation are eligible for this honor. Before selecting the award winners, the Department of Education asks for nominations from top education officials in every state, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity and Bureau of Indian Education. The Council for American Private Education nominates private schools.
All Blue Ribbon-named schools will be recognized in a conference and awards ceremony in Washington D.C. November 14-15.
