The woman accused of burning her children, killing one of them, was sentenced to 85 years Friday.
The sentence was the maximum the judge could have imposed within the terms of the plea.
Maria Joseph Gardner, who also goes by the name Maria Joseph, reached a plea deal in January when she pleaded guilty to felony one child abuse causing death and four charges of child abuse causing serious bodily injury.
In January, 2008 Joseph poured gasoline on her five children as they slept inside their home on Galena Court, near Flintridge and Academy and then set them on fire.
Her 16-month-old died and her four other children, all under the age of 9, were burned but got out of the home.
Joseph was originally facing 17 counts, including first degree murder, until she took the plea deal last month which dropped the murder charge.

Why is it in every criminal case there is a plea bargain offered? It seems to me not every defendent should be considered for that type of deal especially this woman
i would like to see someone set her on fire and see how well she likes it. Stories like this make me sick. They should definatly do the Death penalty on her! She doesnt deserve to live! She's one Sick Freak!
How do you kill your own children!! For her to have all 5 children in one room and burn them it was premeditated!!!and the court systems offers her a plea!?Using our tax money to house her for the next how ever many years?? That's crazy. She killed her youngest and 4 other scarred for life and she gets to live out her life with our tax money while her kids suffer for life after what she's done. Only in America. Eye for an eye. she should be placed in a room and lit on fire and let her feel what her children did.
