Colorado's drought is making conservation a priority. One of the ways to do that is by Xeriscaping. The trouble is, the low-water gardens can be very expensive.

Here are a few things you can do to save money, and save water.

First, come up with a budget, and a design for your yard, namely, the number and types of plants you need. Next comes the actual planting, which is most effectively done in cooler weather like in the fall, which willl put your yard in better shape for the spring.

One inexpensive way to make your yard look nicer is to mulch around your plants. The mulch will also help to conserve more water.

When putting in new plants, experts say to leave the sod and just dig underneath it for organic material.

Finally, don't tackle everything at once, take your yard one section at a time.
