Helen Tomicich says the motive for her firing was revenge. She had publicly criticized the director of the library district.
The library board voted in July to end its contract with Tomicich. Her contract began in January 2001 and paid her nearly $62,000 a year. It was to go through December 2004.
Tomicich's contract was canceled amid allegations from critics of the library that she had misled the district by claiming to have a doctorate degree.
Tomicich's lawyer says she has a doctorate from Experiential Universities and that the alternative degree programs are now defunct.
An attorney for the library board refused comment on the lawsuit Monday.
