Amber Alert Helps Locate Woman, Baby

The El Paso County Sheriff's office says a woman and her infant son are safe, after being the subject of an Amber Alert Monday afternoon. And the whole thing may have been based on a misunderstanding.

The alert was issued around 4 p.m. Monday. Investigators originally thought 18-year-old Elizabeth Ruiz and her 8-month-old son, Jonathan Marquez-Ruiz were taken by the child's father, Jose Angel "Pepe" Marquez.

That's because Elizabeth Ruiz was talking to her sister on the cell phone, and told her she was afraid Marquez was going to take her son and her to Florida. Then, the call was disconnected.

The three were found at a car wash on B street in the Springs at about 5:30 Monday evening. Elizabeth told police she was with Marquez voluntarily, and that the cell phone disconnected because the drove into an area without service. She told sheriff's officials the three had been in Denver, running errands.

Sheriff's officials say they are questioning Marquez, but no charges are pending at this time.
