Save our sports.

That's the message Colorado Springs parents and children hope to get across as city council tries to find money for its 2009 budget.

Rain Brown's dream is to play professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He says his time on his flag football team has meant the world to him.

"Its my pride," he says.

But now, the 11-year-old fears his pride will be taken away from him, as adult and youth sports could be cut.

"I was thinking about how this was going to affect my career with football," says Brown.

In an effort to keep the program alive, parents like Colleen Noyes explain why city council should leave the sports alone.

"One, I think it helps keep our children out of trouble, because kids with idle hands get into trouble. Two, I think that it builds life skills that they're going to have for the rest of their life," says Noyes.

But City Councilwoman Margaret Radford says making up for a 16 to 18 million dollar budget shortfall will take prioritizing needs over wants.

"Its unfortunately not parks and trails and rec centers. It's 'are the police here when that guy is busting in your back door?'" says Radford.

Football coach Carl Brown says sports is a need.

"It's their future thats going to decide the stability of the country later. And if we take that away from them, we're really not fixing the problem, just band-aiding it," says Coach Brown.

On Monday, City Council will discuss their options with the parks and recreation portion of the 2009 budget.

They will vote on it officially on Tuesday.

The real issue is who in City Council needs to be replaced? Who got the budget to such a point that this is an option? Stop using fear tactics to coverup mistakes and bigger issues. You need more cops and jails because you did not teach the criminals what is right and wrong when the were children. Start teaching the kids early and then you have less criminals. Kids need these programs to keep them away from gangs and drugs. You create a bigger problem later if you take these programs away now. The programs generate money and use volunteers. Think about it.

I'm an active duty member of the USAF & have two kids. The AF has 3 core values; INTEGRITY FIRST-do the right thing all the time, EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO-do your best no matter how hard the obstacle, SERVICE BEFORE SELF-taking the time to help others in needing times...As a parent I strive to find ways to encourage these values in all aspects of life to my kids. One is through SPORTS! In the same respect, I believe all of our service members, firemen, police officers, public service attendants, teachers, coaches, counselors, mom’s & dad's, etc. make these sacrifices each day to teach WHO? OUR YOUTH! What about? VALUES! The Youth Sports Programs have been the foundation and are used as valuable tools, towards reaching out to our youth, as it has made an impact on me 16 years ago, and yet still! And what better way to accomplish how we impact the lives of these boys & girls..? YES, the Sports Program! We as parents may know $$$, but through the eyes of our kids is PRICELESS...

I won't go into everything already mentioned, it should go without having to be said. My son has played football for CSPR for several years even though we were not yet living in the Springs. It was worth the drive. These coaches volunteer not only their time, they give so much of themselves to these kids. It's not just a game to them any more than it's just a game to our kids. These coaches insisted on good grades in school even asking for progress reports. No profanity was allowed, poor sportsmanship, disrespect, the list could go on. To some of these children, this is the only place they get positive influence. Some think we can't afford to keep this program. I, along with so many others believe we can't afford to lose this program. Drugs along with so many other negatives are on every corner tempting our children, let's keep this positive for them.
