Officials with Colorado Medicaid announced Thursday they are covering the costs for a Monument toddler to receive a life-saving intestine transplant.

11 News told you about Emerson White on Monday, she needs a new intestine but she has already maxed out her insurance and a temporary medicaid plan she was on in the state of Colorado has expired. Colorado Medicaid is now going to give the girl coverage.

"Emerson may have found a loop hole and that Emerson will be covered inpatient and outpatient while she's in Nebraska," said Emerson’s mom Erika.

And that means Emerson can go on the transplant list. "By the will of god, and the support of the community and everything that's been said and done by everybody out there, can't be more thankful," said her father Jim White.

Emerson has been in a Nebraska hospital for months, recovering from a multi-organ transplant. A few weeks ago her body rejected the small intestine. "Hopefully within a short period of time another organ becomes available," Jim said.

And while her doctors in Nebraska are also thrilled at the news, the next transplant could be even more challenging for little Emerson. "It's a high risk endeavor for the first transplant and the second transplant increases the risks even more," said Dr. Alan Langnas at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Her parents are just glad they were able to work through the red tape. "I think there are some things that can be approved in the system to make sure that people don't go through what we went through," Jim said.

So their daughter can at least be given another chance to fight. “I know she just wants a chance to live," Erika said.

Emerson's family tells 11 News they are hopeful that she will be able to get her transplant within 30 days.

Emerson was born with an undiagnosed metabolic disorder. "She's not been able to eat or drink by mouth since she was born," her mother Erika White said.
