The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is back in business. The 64 mile narrow gauge run opened its season Saturday morning with a fully loaded train from Chama, New Mexico, to Antonito, Colorado.
About 200 people were on board for the inaugural run of the year.
Wildfires cut the railway season short last year and dropped traffic down to 22,000 from the average of 50,000. U.S. Forest Service officials had ordered the railroad closed to reduce the threat that sparks from the train would start more fires in the Carson National Forest.
Railroad consultant Richard Gomez says the area around the railroad is much greener this year because of good spring precipitation.
