Two-year old Emerson White of Monument is quickly becoming a victim of bureaucracy. The toddler received a transplant on her small intestine, liver and pancreas back in June of 2008. She received the transplant at a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska because no hospital in Colorado could perform the operation.
Seven months later the liver and pancreas are responding well, but Emerson's body has rejected the small intestine. She is now in desperate need of a second transplant, but funding has run out.
Emerson has already maxed out her family's personal heath insurance at two million dollars. She then went on Colorado Medicaid, but now the state is telling the family that because Emerson has been in Nebraska so long, they no longer consider her a resident of Colorado.
The funding the family was receiving from the State of Colorado was based on a waiver that allowed her to receive treatment even though she was out of state. That waiver has now been pulled.
Emerson is nearly healthy enough to go back on the donor list, but without prior funding approval that won't happen. Without this transplant, doctors have told Emerson's parents that she will not survive.
Calls made to Colorado Lawmakers went unanswered on Monday due to the holiday. Stay with 11 News for more updates on Emerson's situation.

Anon - You are quick to make statements about not thinking the taxpayers should pay for this childs medical bills, but I can bet you would be the first in line if this was your child. Why can't we live by the principles the good lord put into place? What ever happened to " Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You"? We were brought into this world as a people of compassion, a compassion that is to be shared with those in need. At this time it is the White family, but we never know when it may be us and our family that needs the compassion. Noone understands what this family is going through until you have had to go through it yourself. This child has put up a fight to stay alive, and the government should find a way to ensure she has every possible chance to continue living. Everyone should give as they see fit, but by all means noone should put this family down for wanting the best for their child. Keeping praying that this issue will be resolved quickly.
See SJ, you are the tyical loon with your eyes shut. We aren't ignoring the little girl's issue, We are answering the question 'when did people stop caring about people' and abortion is part of that answer. Sorry you don't want to hear the truth or don't like it. Welcome to reality, SJ.
I cannot believe that anyone would be so mean as some of these people are on here. People beg for us to help kids in other countries that are starving, dying or whatever and some people donate thousands of dollars not to mention what our government gives to support those countries. That is our tax payer money too. If we can do pay to treat kids in other countries then why not pay for the kids that live in this Country to get the care the so desperately need. It is not like this little girl came in the world and caused herself to have health issues, and she deserves all the right treatment she can get just like you and I would!
