Workplace Deaths On The Rise

DENVER (AP) -- Officials say transportation accidents accounted for 61 percent of the total with 76 deaths.

The second-leading cause was "contact with objects or equipment," which included workers who were struck by an object or were caught or crushed in equipment or materials.

Third was exposure to harmful substances or environments.

Mary Chase is the director of the Vital Statistics Unit at the health department. She says it hasn't analyzed the data to determine why workplace deaths rose because a lack of resources.

Debra Tuenge, coordinator of the Colorado Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, says the most deaths occurred on a Thursday. Deaths were also most likely to occur between 9 and 10 a-m.
