The window of opportunity for thousands of Colorado tax cheaters has closed, but not before thousands took advantage of it.
The state's tax amnesty program officially ended June 30.
Revenue officials are still accepting letters and payments mailed by the deadline, but hope to bring in some $5 million in back taxes.
Gov. Owens announced the Pay the Tax or Pay the Max program in May. It allowed delinquent taxpayers to pay up during June without penalties and only half the interest.
A revenue department spokeswoman tells Denver's KUSATV that some individuals and businesses paid more than $200,000 in back taxes.
One business paid $1 million worth of taxes, but saved $183,000 in penalties.
