We all know times are tough and parents are getting creative and thinking of ways to trim costs. Maybe cutting your kids' hair or even your husband's hair is something you can do to save money?
A local mom and daughter here in Colorado created a, "Do it yourself DVD."
It teaches you how to cut, color and style hair. The creators say if you're a visual learner, their DVD would work great for you.
But beauty specialists say toying with people's hair without the experience could get hairy.
Kitty Victor who is a consultant for A Total New You Salon in Colorado Springs says it takes 1,800 hours of schooling and 500 haircuts under your belt before you can cut-it in the professional world.
"It's a scary thought. It's like watching a football player or a ballet dancer, it looks easy," says Victor.
But she says it's not when it comes down to actually cutting someone's hair.
"We might just put up a sign that says, 'We fix home hair cuts,'" said Victor jokingly.
"It's very easy to follow," said Becky Harris who is co-founder of Bring it Home Beauty. She says it never hurts to color up your resume by learning a few tricks on how to do hair.
"It's great right now with the economy the way it is," said Harris.
Harris says there are those who will always go to the pros. "People do this anyway at home and all we're doing is helping them do it the right way," said Harris.
When it comes to coloring your hair, "The wrong chemical mixed with the wrong chemical can break hair off," said Victor. "We tell everyone to follow the manufacturer's directions," said Harris.
There's a tape on how to do nails, too.
If you would like to purchase their DVDs you can order them on-line through their web-site by clicking on the link below, or you can call them at, 1-888-667-5442.
Harris also says they come in both English and Spanish and right now are offering free shipping.

I have been a hair stylist in Colorado for 25 years. I have never seen my business so incredibly slow as it is right now. Everyone is affected by the economy, including those of us in the beauty industry. I am not sure if the person putting out these DVD's is a lisenced professional, but if you are, shame on you. You are making things harder for those of us in the industry trying to maintain a clientele in this economy.
My wife works at a salon here in the Springs, And things like this bring in more business. People are constantly coming in to have "box color" and "haircuts at home" things fixed. What is funny is that it ends up costing more in the long run to have things corrected. And to Melissa. It does take stylist's MANY HOURS to be licensed to cut hair. Not to mention schooling and lots of hard work. No-one said they were "surgeons", But they are Artists. You get what you pay for.
I will always go to a salon.
