Even as Israel considers a peace plan, it is moving ahead with its attempts to forcefully stomp out militant rocket fire in Gaza.

Israel says it struck 40 Hamas targets in the cover of night. Gaza officials say one morning airstrike has killed four people. And heavy gunfire bellowed in a neighborhood east of Gaza City. The fighting has left some 600 Palestinians dead.

After international uproar over civilian casualties, including an Israeli strike near a U.N. school sheltering hundreds of refugees, Israel has agreed to set up a "humanitarian corridor" to ship supplies into Gaza.

The U.N. is demanding an investigation into the attack, which left at least 30 Palestinians dead. Israel says its troops were returning fire on a Hamas squad.

A peace plan announced by Egypt and France which involves an immediate cease-fire has won the Palestinian president's support. Israel hasn't commented yet.
