A town home went up in flames Tuesday morning at 4250 Charleston Drive, near Hancock and Jet Wing Drive.
The fire has been ruled accidental. Investigators say someone left food unattended on the stove.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department says they got the call around 7:30 a.m. of the report of a fire. They arrived at 7:35 a.m. and it took them about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.
Lieutenant Julie Stone with the Colorado Springs Fire Department says this is the seventh residential fire in the past two weeks, which is unusual. At least six of them have been caused by careless mistakes.
"I just want to remind people during this time of year to not leave any open flames unattended, make sure smoke alarms are working and sit down with your family and talk about an escape plan," said Lt. Julie Stone.
Fire officials say the home is now unable to be lived in due to extensive damage to the main level of the home and to the second floor. Damage is estimated at $60,000.
Three people were inside the home at the time of the fire. None of them were injured but one neighbor was treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
One firefighter was also treated on scene for minor injuries.
