Some counties are now renewing driver's licenses, taking up the slack after the state shut down a third of its motor vehicle offices to save money.
Counties usually handle only car registration and license plates, but 19 are now processing license renewals. Steve Tool of the state's Motor Vehicle Business Group says the counties handle only renewals that don't require a written test or a driving test.
Tool says the state still provides the equipment for photos and eye exams.
Since December, the state has closed 25 of its 84 Motor Vehicle offices.
