A portion of President-elect Barack Obama's proposed stimulus package has city leaders across the country lining up for a handout. Obama recently pledged to "Create millions of jobs by making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s."
That infrastructure plan may begin at the city level, with the U.S. Conference of Mayors asking cities to submit "wish lists" of projects that are ready to go in 2009. The idea is to create jobs right away by funding projects that are set to start within 90 to 120 days.
Most of the projects submitted by city leaders include transportation, water, and community development among several other areas.
In Colorado Springs, the initial list submitted included 67 projects which totaled more than 1.2 billion dollars. That price tag was the same amount submitted by the much larger city of Dallas, TX. Cam McNair, City Engineer in Colorado Springs says they have since slashed the number of projects back to a more realistic eight. Those projects, all road construction still total a whopping 644 million dollars.
Here is a list of the projects that could potentially be funded by the proposed stimulus plan:
--Powers Blvd./Stewart Interchange with Peterson Air Force Base ($50 million)
-- I-25/US-24 Cimarron Street Interchange Project ($90 million)
--Widening of I-25 North from Academy Blvd to Interquest Pkwy ($188 million)
-- Woodmen Road between I-25 and US 24 ($135 million)
--Extend North Powers Blvd to I-25 ($150 million)
--SH 16 East of Fort Carson Gate 20 ($20 million)
--US 24: Circle Drive to Powers Blvd ($8.5 million)
--US 24: East Bridge over Draw ($ 3 million)
