Not Endangered

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has rejected a demand by environmentalists to list the Canada lynx as an endangered species in the lower 48 states.

The decision means the cats will remain listed as threatened, which is
a less protected designation.

The decision was denounced by environmentalists. Mike Leahy, of
Defenders of Wildlife, says the lynx still are in big trouble even though there has been some progress in the northern Rockies.

The group had won a court ordered review of the government's decision against giving the animal endangered species status. Leahy
says he doesn't know if his group or any other will challenge the decision.
