A slow drive on I-25 in Colorado Springs may get faster in some areas. Officials at Cosmix say they're just weeks away from expanding the highway to three lanes in one congested area.
I-25 between Fillmore and Garden of the Gods should go to three lanes in the southbound direction by mid-September. The northbound lanes could stay at two lanes of traffic, until construction on the Garden of the Gods overpass is completed. Even if one side of I-25 does stay at two lanes, drivers are looking forward to any kind of improvement in traffic flow in this area of town.
"That would be fantastic," said one Colorado Springs commuter.
"I'm hoping so," said another driver. "That's been quite the cluster for some time and it's a busy part (of town)."
Cosmix officials say for now, three lanes of traffic on the northbound side of the 'I' may do more harm than good for traffic flow. They say lane closures at the Garden of the Gods overpass would force three lanes of traffic into two or even one at that location, causing a massive bottleneck.
In the coming months, cosmix is also planning to do work at I-25 and Bijou as well as the I-25 bridge over Colorado Avenue.
Work on the Bijou street bridge will start on January 2nd while work over Colorado Avenue will begin after the City of Colorado Springs finishes their work on the Cimarron Street bridge.
