A portion of Colorado's main east-west interstate reopened this afternoon as crews continued to repair water-saturated pavement around a sinkhole that shut it down four days ago.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 now are open to single-lane
traffic in two directions -- while the westbound lanes remained
closed.

The highway typically carries 30-thousand vehicles a day in
June.

The 24-mile section of the highway was initially closed Sunday
when floodwaters washed out an underground culvert and opened a
22-foot-wide sinkhole in westbound lanes. Eastbound lanes reopened
early Wednesday but the road started sinking again.

Tests now show that the road is indeed stable.
