More Colorado residents and businesses are filing for bankruptcy than ever before.

Filings for the first six months of the year are running 21 percent ahead of 2002.

Experts say a rocky economy and massive layoffs pushed bankruptcy filings to 21,260 last year. There have been 1,294 personal and business bankruptcy filings so far this year.

A recent study shows Colorado with the nation's second-highest percentage increase in bankruptcy filing rates over a two-year period ending in March.

The bankruptcy boom has forced the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver to consider adding two trustees to the court 19-member panel.
