A man shoveling the sidewalk outside his own home was kidnapped at gunpoint.

It happened Sunday night in the 4900 block of Farthing Drive in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood.

Around 6 p.m. at night, Joe Widhalm was shoveling snow on his sidewalk. "A vehicle drove up, and stopped at my house. A masked individual got out with a gun," said Widhalm.

That suspect forced Widhalm into his house to get his wallet and made sure the wife couldn't call for help. “He made me bond her wrists and tape up ankles to immobilize her."

Widhalm and the crook then headed for an ATM machine. "I withdrew the max off of the ATM card. After that, I drive to a point where he got out and told me to go home."

The crook left in a waiting getaway car, making away with a few hundred bucks. "I was trying to remain calm and do what he wanted me to do."

Scared for his life, Widhalm is grateful he and his wife are both okay. "You don't realize when you're shoveling your walk that you could be a target of opportunity," said Widhalm.

He said he'll never shovel his sidewalk after dark again.

Police don’t have a lot to go on at the point. One of the suspects is described as a black male, in his 20’s, with a thin build. Widhalm didn’t see the other suspect, who was driving a white SUV type vehicle.

Has the question been asked if this incident is related to the murder in Stetson Hills while the man was shoveling snow? It would seem that a person would try to prevent these thugs from entering ones home and the Stetson Hills man may have died trying to protect his family. We need more law enforcement on the streets working the small crimes which will result in a reduction in larger crimes..It worked in NY.

You have to wonder if there is any conncetion between crimes like this, the increased breeakins in the southwest, and the heroin ( and certainly other drugs) problem at CMHS. Maybe if they would prosecute all those involved, and remove them from our school communities, we could see some decrease in crimes like robbery and buglary.

wtf?!?!?!? I've lived here my entire life and have never heard of anything like this happening here before. It probably has to do with new military recruits and the loosening of minimum requirements to meet recruiting goals for the "war." There used to be a time when the military was respectable.
