Colorado's Patrick Roy says he did everything he could to be the best.
Roy retired this afternoon as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. He made the announcement in front of a packed media room at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
Roy says he's “had a blast” playing for 18 years. He says he's fortunate to have lived a dream and been able to earn a living playing a game he loves.
The Avalanche goalie spoke alternately in English and French, since the news conference was also carried by Canadian media.
The 37-year-old Roy owns nearly every major goaltending record. He is a four-time Stanley Cup champion, winning two each with Colorado and Montreal.
Roy thanked loyal fans in both locations.
