The man shot and killed by El Paso County Sheriff's deputies on December 5 has been identified.

Police say deputies shot 30-year-old Christopher Obertino of Colorado Springs. Obertino was driving towards them in a stolen truck, in an alley off Constitution between Union and Farragut.

"Apparently the individual tried to drive toward the deputies, they felt they were in peril, shots were fired," said Lt. David Whitlock with the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Police say the shots were fired in the alley between Meade Ave. and Union. They were heard by many in the area.

"My son and I were in the living room, we heard three gunshots," said Payal Babin, she lives so close by, her front yard is now part of the crime scene.

"They just said I know it's your property but don't cross the yellow tape," Babin said.

Police say they are still trying to piece together the events that lead up to the shooting, but they say the two sheriff's deputies were in the neighborhood, investigating some property crimes at home when they spotted a truck that turned out to be stolen. They drove into the alley to investigate.

"They were outside of their cars when the suspect drove towards them in his vehicle," said Lt. Whitlock.

Police say that's when the deputies fired at the truck, hitting the Obertino.

"The individual drove out of the alley and headed west on Constitution, hit a light pole and a tree," Whitlock said.

Police say Obertino died at Memorial Hospital, the two deputies who also have not been identified, are now on leave.

"Our deputies will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation for a minimum of 48 hours," said Lt. Lari Sevene with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

After readings some of these postings, I can not believe the stupidity I am seeing typed out. I am a cop. I also knew Chris personally and grew up with him. I was very sorry to hear about what happened and it truely is a shame that he was killed, But I was also very happy to hear the deputies were not hurt. To all of you who say he was "unarmed". Are you seriously that stupid? He was armed with a 2000 pound deadly weapon aimed directly at the deputies. What would you do if you had someone driving a vehicle directly at you in an alleyway with nowhere to go. I think his intentions were pretty clear and an appropriate response was delivered. Number 1 rule in law enforcement. WE GO HOME! NO MATTER WHAT! Thank you to all that support what we do. Our job is tough! I have missed birthdays, Xmas', my sons first steps, and cried for my brothers and sisters lost doing their job..HELPING YOU! KEEPING YOU SAFE! Chris made his bed and the choices got him killed. The right ones WENT HOME!

When you target cops with a truck you get shot. If he would of got out of the truck and gave up he would still be here. You can blame everyone you want. Simple fact is he made a choice and he paid for it. End of story.
