The man shot and killed by El Paso County Sheriff's deputies on December 5 has been identified.

Police say deputies shot 30-year-old Christopher Obertino of Colorado Springs. Obertino was driving towards them in a stolen truck, in an alley off Constitution between Union and Farragut.

"Apparently the individual tried to drive toward the deputies, they felt they were in peril, shots were fired," said Lt. David Whitlock with the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Police say the shots were fired in the alley between Meade Ave. and Union. They were heard by many in the area.

"My son and I were in the living room, we heard three gunshots," said Payal Babin, she lives so close by, her front yard is now part of the crime scene.

"They just said I know it's your property but don't cross the yellow tape," Babin said.

Police say they are still trying to piece together the events that lead up to the shooting, but they say the two sheriff's deputies were in the neighborhood, investigating some property crimes at home when they spotted a truck that turned out to be stolen. They drove into the alley to investigate.

"They were outside of their cars when the suspect drove towards them in his vehicle," said Lt. Whitlock.

Police say that's when the deputies fired at the truck, hitting the Obertino.

"The individual drove out of the alley and headed west on Constitution, hit a light pole and a tree," Whitlock said.

Police say Obertino died at Memorial Hospital, the two deputies who also have not been identified, are now on leave.

"Our deputies will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation for a minimum of 48 hours," said Lt. Lari Sevene with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
