CO Marine Accused Of Desertion Gets Less-Than-Honorable Discharge
A 23-year-old Boulder Iraq veteran accused of deserting from the Marines two years ago is being given a less-than-honorable discharge. Lance Hering was arrested November 16 in Port Angeles, Washington, on charges of desertion and contempt of court.

A 23-year-old Boulder Iraq veteran accused of deserting from the Marines two years ago is being given a less-than-honorable discharge.

Lance Hering was arrested November 16 in Port Angeles, Washington, on charges of desertion and contempt of court.

He was reported missing in August 2006. A friend said Hering had wandered off after he was injured in a rock-climbing accident near Boulder. After a massive search, authorities concluded the report was a hoax.

The Marines took Hering into custody November 22, picking him up from the Clallam County Jail in Washington and taking him to Camp Pendleton, California.

KUSA-TV reports that Hering has been ordered to serve 30 days in the brig at Camp Pendleton but is getting credit for time served while in Washington. He'll also get a less-than-honorable discharge from the Marines.

Hering is expected to be turned over to the Boulder County sheriff's office later this month to face charges of false reporting and failing to comply on a burglary charge.
