Bridge Collapse Update

One westbound lane of Interstate 80 is open at Big Springs, Nebraska, after crews spent Saturday night removing debris from a fatal crash that caused a bridge to collapse on the highway.

The collapse happened Friday night when a westbound semitrailer
slammed into the center support columns of a county road bridge
spanning the interstate in western Nebraska near the Colorado
border. The driver was killed, and one eastbound semi was crushed
by the falling bridge. That driver escaped with only minor injuries.

Nebraska officials say the cleanup is moving faster than expected and they're optimistic that all four lanes of traffic will reopen by Sunday evening.

The cost of the cleanup hasn't been estimated but federal matching funds are expected to help with the expense.
