A Fort Collins man has become the first Coloradan to reach the summit of Mount Everest this year.

Ben Clark made it to the summit late last night ahead of several other Colorado climbers who are attempting the feat this week.

Hundreds of climbers are on the mountain as the 50th anniversary of the first ascent approaches May 29th.

Clark's successful climb was reported on a Web site dedicated to news about Mount Everest climbers.

The 23-year-old had hoped to be the youngest man ever to reach the top of the 29-thousand foot peak.

But 20-year-old Jess Roskelley of Spokane, Washington, aced him out by also reaching the top.
