Colorado Springs police say that one person died Thursday morning after suffering stab wounds, allegedly by the hands of his own son.

Police say it happened around 2:20 a.m. Thursday on Lindenrose Grove, near the intersection of N. Wahsatch Ave. and E. Uintah St. in Colorado Springs.

When they arrived they found 63-year-old Edward M. Fitzgerald dead. His son, 36-year-old Sean Fitzgerald gave himself up to police.

Sean Fitzgerald is being charged with First Degree Murder.

"There were other witnesses there. We are interviewing them to try and figure out what exactly happened," said Lt. David Whitlock with the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Edward Fitzgerald is a prominent orthopaedic surgeon in Colorado Springs at Front Range Orthopaedics.

"It's been a devastating day. Employees are obviously very sad," said Marquesa Hobbs, Marketing Director for Front Range Orthopaedics.

Co-workers say he was generous, caring and compassionate.

He regularly volunteered his time and professional services to the community. He also enjoyed volunteering to serve food and wash dishes at homeless shelters, and liked knowing he was helping others.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

Dr. Fitzgerald was a kind, caring compassionate physician and a man of great character. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him at Front Range Orthopaedics. He will be so greatly missed at our office. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

What a terrible tragedy. Was wondering if the victim is in fact Dr. Fitzgerald of Colorado Springs?
