Ever wondered how easy it is for your teenager to buy alcohol or get served at a bar? It may be easier than you think. Colorado Springs police say about one in ten businesses will sell alcohol to a minor on any given day in El Paso County.

11 News went along with detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department for an undercover sting.

We visited a total of seven businesses; four of them sold to a teenager.

Sitting alone at a table at Our Bar in Colorado Springs, it only took a few moments for our 18-year-old to get a beer. The waiter didn't even ask to see his I.D., he just served him a Budweiser.

A few minutes later, the 18-year-old asks for his bill.

"Hey man, I gotta go, go ahead and pour it out," he said. And undercover detectives walk into the bar and give the waiter a ticket for serving alcohol to a minor.

"The clerk will have to go to criminal court for the offense, the licensee will have to go before the liquor board where they are looking at having punishment against their license," said an undercover detective with Colorado Springs police.

The detective we interviewed is assigned to the Liquor Enforcement Unit. He and one other detective work with state liquor detectives to make sure anyone who sells alcohol is following the law.

"We try to get to at least 50 establishments within the year," he said.

They use different underage teens.

"We send them in with no I.D., it's up to the clerk to do their job and get their I.D. from them," the detective said.

Our 18-year-old tries again, this time at Porky's, a bar off Powers and Omaha.

"Can I get a bud light in a bottle?"

Not only does he get served again; the waitress asks what kind of bottle he would like.

"Do you want an aluminum bottle?" she asks.

"Sure," he replies.

At Porky’s I.D.’s were being checked at the door, but no one checked our teenagers, he walked right in. He gets his beer in the aluminum bottle; the waitress gets a ticket.

"One out of 10 businesses that we go to will typically sell to an underage," said the detective.

One more bar gives our underage teen a beer, La Cantina off Galley and Murray. The waitress asks for his I.D., he tells her he doesn't have it she serves him anyway and gets a ticket.

Next stop a liquor store. South Liquor Mart on South Academy had no problem selling him a six pack and it was a sale that ended up shutting them down for 45 days because police tell me this was the third time they’ve been caught selling to a teen this year.

In all, a total of four businesses served to our teen in one night.

Detectives say they are supposed to visit every liquor establishment in the county four times a year, but they don't even come close.

"They number about 900 between city and county and there are only two of us," said the detective.

So what about all those bars that go unchecked? Detectives know, sales to minors are happening every day.

"If one child in our community gets injured or killed from anything alcohol related, that's too much," said the detective.

They hope those whose job it is to check I.D.'s do it right every time and parents remember, sometimes there's no one there to say no.

Springs police tell 11 News already this year they've caught more than 50 bars or liquor stores breaking the law.

Since the sting, two of the bars police busted have closed. Our Bar was evicted for not paying taxes. La Cantina shut down after other violations.

It amazes me you report on all the bars and liquor stores that contribute to minors, how ever the police don't do anything when you report teens drinking in someones house. I know this for a fact, because I have called and reported drunk minors and the police's comment is it's not important. These are the same minors that end up driving their cars and hurting others and themselves. Don't get me wrong the police TRY to do a good job, but there are things they severly fall short on.

Glad to see some cracking down going on, although I was wondering how old this report was since Our Bar closed over 3 months ago. What about the other 3 establishments that were visited and did not serve the minor? Shouldn't they get some sort of recognition for doing their jobs and not selling to minors?

Sweet! What a great place to be a teenager! Now your liquor is as easy to get as your drugs! Take that Mr. Establishment (total sarcasm haters)!

Good reporting, but a little misleading. Porky's was stung in July, the video posted was from July and drastic measures have been taken since and before then to stop underage drinking. A bar or a club have nothing to gain from selling to a minor. I am not disputing this report, but the way it was presented is a little shady. I noticed you used Oscar's as well but failed to report that the sting was un-successful.
