Thornton police commander Lori Moriarty says Colorado needs to take action against methamphetamine labs because some of them are exposing children to dangerous fumes.
She says sometimes police don't even know when children are inside a home before they raid it for meth.
Moriarty spoke Tuesday at the first meeting of a new state task force looking for solutions to the meth problem.
She and Attorney General John Suthers are both on the task force. They called for more cooperation among police agencies and between police and social service agencies.
State lawmakers set up the panel.
Janet Wood of the Department of Human Services says meth users accounted for 31% of everyone admitted to treatment programs in 2005, up from 14% in 2000.
She says meth has surpassed cocaine as the third-most-abused drug in the state, behind alcohol and marijuana.
Wood says families are often hit hard because about half of meth users are women, compared with a fourth of the population for most other drugs.
