The state of Colorado has a message for tax cheaters -- pay the tax, or pay the max.

An amnesty program during June will allow delinquent taxpayers to pay up during June without penalties and only half the interest. Governor Bill Owens announced the program on Monday morning. It's designed to recoup missing tax money to help the state deal with critical budget shortfalls.

Delinquent taxpayers who don't pay by the end of June will face maximum penalties and interest later. State officials believe they can collect at least $5 million.

Amnesty is available to people who owe taxes that were due last year. People under criminal or civil tax fraud investigation who have already been billed are not eligible.
